A few days ago my dear friend Peter asked me if I could give him some advice on floor reading lamps; he likes contemporary interiors and is looking for something “cool, sleek, not too obtrusive but making a statement”.
So here’s a list of free-standing reading lamps that might fit the bill:
Doride designed by Karim Rashid for Artemide – light, organic, sinuous; available in black and white.
Tolomeo by Michele De Lucchi for Artemide – Designed in 1972, this is a classic that looks good in every interior; the shade is available either in parchment paper or pale grey satin polycarbonate fibre blend.
There’s also a larger version (Tolomeo Mega Floor), with shades available in two different sizes (36 or 42 cm).
Twiggy by Marc Sadler for Foscarini – Available in black, white, yellow and red, Twiggy is essential, elegant and sophisticated.
AJ floor lamp by Arne Jacobsen for Louis Poulsen – another fabulous classic, now available in many fun colours.
Circle floor lamp – De Padova – Light, sleek and fun; I particularly like the yellow version.
Titania by Alberto Meda & Paolo Rizzatto for Luceplan – Another classic, graceful and futuristic; five pairs of interchangeable filters in green, red, blue, yellow and violet, determine the different colourings of the shell, while continuing to emit a white light.
Grasshopper by Greta Magnusson Grossman for Gubi – another timeless piece that will look at home in any interior. Available in blue-grey, warm-grey, anthracite grey, vintage red.
Cobra by Greta Magnusson Grossman for Gubi – same as Grasshopper; available in blue-grey, warm-grey, anthracite grey, old pink.
Vibia i.Cono 715 by Lievore, Altherr, Molina for Vibia Light – Available in white, green and black, a cute lamp with personality.
PostKrisi 024 by Catellani & Smith – I’ve already blogged about this, and I still find the Catellani & Smith range of lights simply amazing. Graceful & elegant, PostKrisi 024 has a shade made of hand painted or natural fibreglass that looks like fabric and creates beautiful effects on the wall. Available in white, red, blue, natural, yellow.
Afra by Anta – Eastern inspiration for this beautiful, essential lamp available in either black or white, with interior finish in gold or silver.
Scantlet P73 by Marset – Nice combo of painted metal and lacquered oak, that creates a sober, tidy yet homely look.
I enjoyed researching these lamps, and I hope Peter finds something he likes too!

Genius! Absolute genius!
I’m going to sit on this for 2 weeks and let you know.
Thank you so much Cri. You’re terrific.
Happy Easter to you both. We’re off to Barcelona in the morning. We want to see the Juan Miro museum and the German Pavillion with the original Barcelona chair by Mies van der Rohe.
Talk soon and thanks again

What a beautiful collection! I would prefer the Grashopper, Arne Jacobsen and the Scantlet P73. Really classical beauties.
